Traditional cancer therapy uses an approach where many patients receive the same drug regardless of their biological makeup. Precision medicine can tailor cancer treatment based on the unique characteristics of that particular patient’s tumor. This personalized approach to cancer therapy is possible through a process called molecular profiling.

Molecular profiling helps physicians and their patients treat cancer smarter by identifying the underlying biomarkers that may be responsible for driving the cancer growth. With knowledge about a patient’s biomarkers, the physician can find and propose treatments that may be more effective or have less side effects when taken by the patient.

This process of confirming a treatment plan, or proposing a new one, based on molecular profiling data can happen relatively quickly if there is already a sample of the patient’s tissue.
