Raul C. Braylan, MD

Clinical Medical Director of Hematopathology Services

Raul C. Braylan, MD, is recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities on flow cytometry in hematolymphoid neoplasia. In addition, he is credited with establishing standardization in flow cytometry clinical utility, data analysis, and reporting through his work on both the US Canadian Consensus Recommendations and the 2006 Bethesda International Conference Recommendations for flow cytometric immunophenotyping. Before joining Caris Life Sciences™, he served as the chief of the Hematopathology Section of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine.

Dr. Braylan has published more than 150 peer reviewed papers, books and chapters. In his role as former director of the fellowship training program in hematopathology at the University of Florida, he was responsible for the training of pathologists both nationally and internationally. Dr. Braylan is a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), American Society of Hematology (ASH), Association of Molecular Pathology (AMP), International Society for Analytical Cytology (ISAC), Society for Hematopathology (SH), Clinical Cytometry Society (CCS) and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP).

Michael Miller, DO, FCAP, FASCP

Operational Medical Director of Hematopathology

Michael Miller, DO, is the former section head of hematopathology and director of the fellowship program in hematopathology for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is also a former director of clinical pathology and professor of pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he also served as the medical director of pathology at the Zale Lipshy University Hospital, and medical director of the Veripath Reference Laboratory. Dr. Miller's experience includes private practice at UniPath in Denver, Colorado, where he practiced hematopathology and surgical pathology.

Dr. Miller's special interests include leukemias, lymphomas, and coagulation disorders. He has published numerous peer reviewed papers and book chapters, and has given numerous scientific and educational presentations at national and international meetings. Dr. Miller is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and hematopathology. He is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), and is a member of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), Association of Molecular Pathology (AMP), and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP).

Sheryl Asplund, MD

Hematopathologist

Sheryl Asplund, MD, is a board certified anatomic/clinical pathologist and hematopathologist with special expertise in flow cytometry.  She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Medical School and completed her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Asplund performed her hematopathology fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.

After completing her fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dr. Asplund stayed on as faculty, served as the medical director of the flow cytometry laboratory, and practiced hematopathology. She left the university in 2003 to establish a flow cytometry laboratory for UniPath in Denver, Colorado. In addition, she practiced general anatomic and clinical pathology as well as hematopathology.

Qingmei Xie, MD

Hematopathologist

Qingmei Xie, MD, served as an assistant professor and hematopathologist at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, where she was also the director of flow cytometry. In addition, she served as a staff scientist in the Department of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

Dr. Xie is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and hematopathology. She is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), as well as a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP).

Wendy L. Flejter, PhD, FACMG

Director of Genetics, Hematopathology Services

Wendy L. Flejter, PhD, has over 30 years of clinical experience in genetics and molecular diagnostics and is board certified in clinical cytogenetics, and a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG.) She is a fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG), and is a member of the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), and the Association of Molecular Pathology (AMP).

Dr. Flejter was most recently the vice president of laboratory operations for Artemis Health, Inc. Previously, she served as the executive director of cytogenetics for Esoterix Oncology, Inc. and LabCorp, as well as director of the cytogenetics laboratory for Dianon Systems, Inc.

Matthew J. McGinniss, PhD, FACMG

Director of Molecular Diagnostics

Matthew J. McGinniss, PhD, joined Caris Life Sciences™ with synergistic experience in laboratory operation; assay development and validation; quality improvement and assurance; and resource management.

Dr. McGinniss has served as the executive director for Prometheus Laboratories, the senior director of molecular genetics at Quest Diagnostics, and as part-time laboratory director of molecular genetics at the University of California San Diego. Before these positions, he spent three years at Sequenom in San Diego and served as the principal molecular geneticist at the Children's Hospital in San Diego.

Dr. McGinniss is a diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC) in molecular diagnostics as well as American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) in clinical molecular genetics. He is a fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG), is a member of the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), the Association of Molecular Pathology (AMP), the Clinical Laboratory Management Association (CLMA), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and holds a Six Sigma Green Belt certification.

David Loesch, MD

Director of Oncology, Clinical Trials and Services

David Loesch, MD, was a practicing medical oncologist with Central Indiana Cancer Centers (CICC) for over 18 years before coming to Caris Life SciencesTM. In addition to his clinical practice with CICC, he was the primary investigator and scientific director of the Indiana Cancer Research Foundation, a non-profit organization chartered by the hematologists and oncologists of Central Indiana Cancer Centers.

Dr. Loesch has made significant contributions in the area of breast cancer research and has served as co-chairman of the Breast Cancer Committees for the US Oncology (USO) Network and the Hoosier Oncology Group. In 2006, he was bestowed the Indiana Breast Cancer Alliance Medical Researcher 'Excellence' Award and in 2007 was named the Indiana Breast Cancer Researcher of the Year by the Indiana Breast Cancer Coalition.

Dr. Loesch’s research on chemotherapy in breast cancer and in hormone-refractory prostate cancer has been published extensively. In addition, the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) have accepted many of his abstracts. He is currently a member of ASCO and the American College of Physicians (ACP). He is a diplomate in both internal medicine and medical oncology.
