Is Molecular Profiling Right for You?

If you are interested in learning about whether you may benefit from molecular profiling, talk with your oncologist. As with any treatment plan, you and your doctor will need to work together to decide what options may work best. While patients cannot order molecular profiling tests themselves, you can be proactive about raising this topic with your doctor.

Questions for your Doctor

Unlike consumer DNA testing kits to determine ancestry, patients cannot order molecular profiling tests, but you can be proactive in discussing this topic with your doctor. If you are interested in learning whether molecular profiling may be appropriate in determining your therapy options, talk with your oncologist. As with any treatment plan, you and your doctor will decide what options are best.

Questions to consider asking your treating oncologist:

  • Am I a good candidate for molecular profiling?
  • What type of molecular profiling are you thinking about ordering? Is it comprehensive to include all DNA and RNA genes, along with proteins?
  • If not, why wouldn’t we do a more comprehensive molecular profile if one is available?
  • Will molecular profiling help identify different treatment options (i.e. chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy) and/or clinical trials? And, how will you use this information?
  • Can we use existing biopsy samples for molecular profiling, or will I need a new biopsy?

What should I ask?
