Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States. It was established in 1943 as the Detroit Institute for Cancer Research. Our mission statement reads: Karmanos Cancer Institute is a unique, integrated center of research, patient care and education, dedicated to the prevention, early detection, treatment and eventual eradication of cancer. Our vision is to be a world leader in cancer care, research and education through courage, commitment and compassion.
Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D., is the Institute’s president and chief executive officer, as well as vice chair of the Caris Centers of Excellence for Precision Medicine Network Steering Committee.
Karmanos is part of the largest cancer research and provider network in Michigan, providing cancer care in 48 Michigan counties. Cancer patients have increased access to advanced cancer care in Detroit and communities throughout the state. We care for approximately 12,000 new patients annually. We also offer more cancer treatments not found elsewhere in Michigan. In partnership with Caris, Karmanos looks forward to actively participating in the development of standards of care and best practices for integrating and using tumor profiling to increase patient access to personalized medicine in clinical settings.
